Excerpt from Howaito Maki/The Red Captain

Hey all!  Volume 4 is still free as an eBook at Smashwords.  Click here to get your own copy!

See for yourself what Volume 4 is made of!  Here’s an excerpt:

PROTAGONIST: FRANCES BEZNAR

I’m able to analyze him amid the clamor and shifting torrent of bodies around me.  And I guess I shouldn’t be surprised.  He’s found his first victim.  He knows who he wants to challenge first.

He’s staring at me.

I swallow, and for a moment, fear induces my heart.  But then I come to my senses again, thinking that, after all, this is what we wanted.  We wanted to draw the captains out.  We wanted to keep them away from the prisoners.  And, while we’re at it, we might as well give them a fight worth remembering.

I lower my head and raise my shield, rushing like a bull through the mass of Knights, Beloved and Evil, slamming the wall of opponents aside as I run forward.  I come to an abrupt halt before the Gray Captain and lower my shield, holding my sword out behind me in preparation for slashing at him.  “You’re a captain?” I inquire.  “Funny, me too.”

I pivot towards him, sending a bone-crashing blow for his left shoulder.

He raises his left arm and intercepts the slash with his forearm, his arm not even flinching from the force of my attack.  I grunt, wide-eyed.  “Heh,” he says, his voice scraggly, and slightly high-pitched for his size, “you may be a captain, but you’re hardly a match for me!”

I draw back my sword; there’s no blood.

It’s been a long road.   There has been lots of excitement along the way.  But now it’s time for the end of my first arc.  It’s time for the first finale.  The battle is almost over.  Dawn is about to break through the night.

Welcome to the “feels” of Volume 4, my dear followers 😀

There are many people I must mention, many people that deserve a hand.  First, I’m thankful to God for helping me become the writer that I am.  He is undoubtedly one of my biggest inspirations.  Second, my younger sister Clare, who helps me with all of the artwork/covers for TGL, as well as the plot structure for every volume.  Third would be my mom and dad for their editing and insights.  And last would be you, my followers, for sticking with me for this whole ride.

Dang, I haven’t even officially told anybody yet, and I’ve already got 17 downloads!

Thanks for being awesome and sticking with The Golden Lands.  As promised at the beginning of Volume 4, I hope you agree that this is my greatest work yet…and I will do my best to keep on writing better and better.

So what’s Volume 4 about, in case you missed it?

John, Faith, and Bernard have come farther than they ever thought possible. They’ve persevered through every struggle, every personal trial, and every foe that has come their way. Now the final battle has arrived. Allying with the people of Castrum Fortress, John and his friends must storm the city of Howaito Maki and defeat the three Evil captains…or every prisoner of the Evil will die.

Enjoy everyone and spread the word!

Stay awesome,

Sorry for the Short Notice…Volume 4 Will be Published on TUESDAY!!!

The title says it all.  Grab a snack.  Grab some friends.  Tell your grandparents.  Get cozy.  Another volume of The Golden Lands has arrived!!!

At long last, after a much anticipated wait, Volume 4 is finally finished.  As I have said before, not only have I completed another book–due to much help from family, friends, and the Big Guy–but also the first story arc of TGL.  This is a cause for celebration…meaning that the existing books of TGL will be undergoing some constructive changes.  More editing will be done, the covers will be updated, etc.  In other words, I’m using this opportunity to revise TGL as the series now stands.  There’s a lot of work to be done.

But hey, we can worry about that later!  Here’s an overview of Volume 4, in case you missed it!

PLOT SUMMARY:

John, Faith, and Bernard have come farther than they ever thought possible.  They’ve persevered through every struggle, every personal trial, and every foe that has come their way.  Now the final battle has arrived.   Allying with the people of Castrum Fortress, John and his friends must storm the city of Howaito Maki and defeat the three Evil captains…or every prisoner of the Evil will die.

EXCERPT:

We come to a halt, stopping right beneath the wall which rises high above us.  Thunderous booms sound in the distance, and we can vaguely hear the clashing of weapons and the screams of pain.  “So the fighting has already started,” says one of the scouts with us.

“That’s our diversion,” states Ashida.  “Let’s make the most of it.”

A long rope dangles from where we fastened it at the summit of the wall.  It’s our only way up and into the city.  I raise my eyes to the top of the rope, and I feel my heart beat faster.  I don’t know why, but the top of this rope…it’s like the threshold—the threshold of destiny.  Once I climb this rope, I’ll be in the city.  I’ll be on the final part of my journey.  I’ll be on the doorstep of rescuing my siblings.

My siblings…

This is the final endeavor.  I feel like I’ve known everything that would happen up until now.  I’ve never been surprised truly.  There hasn’t been as much mystery as I feel there is now.  Nothing about the future is clear anymore.  Nothing is black and white.  Because, from here…

—I look at the sky, the clouds, the dullness and gloom that fills this region—

…everything is gray.

I cast a worried glance at Faith and Bernard, and I can’t help but feel closer to them at this moment.  “Listen,” I say, “whatever happens, I want you both to know that you’ve been great; you’ve been my best friends.  I know we’ve been through a lot, and a big part of that is my fault, but—”

“John,” Bernard cuts me off, “it’s okay.  Stop acting like we’re going to die when we get in there.   We can do this.”  He smiles reassuringly at me, as does Faith.  “Come on,” Bernard says, stepping towards the rope, “let’s go get your brother and sister.”

It’s time, ladies and gentlemen.  Buckle up.   It’s going to be an epic ride.

Stay awesome,

Dom

“This is a well-paced story with compelling main characters and plenty of action.” (Fan, four star review) (Smashwords.com)

“Lots of action and interesting philosophy on good versus evil, with a nice set of mysteries. The battle scenes are well-described., and am looking forward to further stories.” (Author Christy Nicholas, four star review) (Smashwords.com)

“This is a great fast-paced, action-packed adventure story. I kinda wish the fight with the dragon lasted a little longer though.” (Fan, four star review) (Smashwords.com)

“After I read the prologue on the author’s blog, I knew I had to read the rest of the book, so as soon as I heard that it was published, I got it. I was not disappointed.

John Hedekira and Faith Pinck are both realistic characters with depth, and the story is fast-paced and exciting.

I would recommend this book to anyone who is looking for a action-packed adventure story. I can’t wait to read the next one!” (Fan, five star review) (Smashwords.com)

This is an intense action/fiction. The book is well written. The characters, landscape, and especially fight scenes are artfully described by the author. The plot is extremely fast-paced. This was hard to get used to at first, but I have a feeling that the length of the whole series will make up for any trace of a rushed plot in each volume. Despite the fast-pace of the story, the author seems very determined to slowly develop his characters, which, coupled with the awesome action really makes for a good story. I would recommend this short novel to anyone, especially people who enjoy fantasy, anime, or manga.” (Fan, four star review) (Amazon.com)

99 Copies

Hey all!  So I’ve officially had 99 people buy or download a volume of The Golden Lands.  Which means, obviously, that I’m one copy away from having reached 100!

Wanna’ be that person to help me hit a landmark?

Here’s an overview of Volume 1 and a few places you can get it (for free, too!).

PLOT SUMMARY:

The Golden Lands, one of the three worlds of Terra, is supposed to be a place of peace, light, and happiness. But the Golden Lands hasn’t exactly been such a place for John Hedekira, a jaded, hot-headed teenager. His parents disappear when he is thirteen, and he’s left to look after his younger sister and brother. One evening, John decides that he has had it with the distant, self-pitiful dispositions of his siblings, and resolves to shut them out of his life for good…or so he thinks. That same evening, a band of warriors of a dark race invade his home, kidnapping John’s siblings…and leaving him to bleed out on the floor of his own house. But John is not undone so easily. Compelled by his own hatred of the warriors that left him to die, and a sense of duty towards his siblings, John sets out on a quest for vengeance. Joining him is Faith Pinck, a caring, innocent girl who doesn’t yet understand the true motives behind John’s desire to track the evil band of warriors. And in the midst of their adventures as they journey to rescue John’s siblings, they begin to uncover a deeper, darker plot that will endeavor to collide the world of humanity with the world of an unholy, malicious, supernatural being.

WHERE YOU CAN FIND IT:

At iBooks (I think it’s either free or $2.99 here)

Thanks so much for all of your support.  It’s hard to be a self published author; it takes lots of time, lots of thinking, and lots of willpower.  Sometimes, we fall into lacking willpower.  Few things can better inspire me to keep on persevering than your support!  So thanks again.

Stay awesome.

The Clock is Ticking…

The countdown to the release of Volume 3 begins!  I haven’t exactly set a date for publication yet, but everything is just about ready!

Volume 3: The Ghost of Hedekira should be an exciting issue!  I had a bit of trouble at first with deciding what direction I should take Volume 3 in.  Originally, the plots of both Volume 3 and 4 were to be combined into a single book.  The plot which now stands as the focus of Volume 3 was supposed to give an exciting “middle” to the old Volume 3.  Instead, I decided that this “middle” part would be able to stand as its own novella.  And I’m glad I made that choice; it gave me so much more room to expand my world and develop my characters.  Not having to rush is pretty great!

Thus, the first story arc of The Golden Lands will end with Volume 4.  I have aptly dubbed this arc the “Soror and Frater” arc.  I guess I’m kinda alluding to the fact that, in Volume 4, John and his friends will finally face Nirak, and the quest for Soror and Frater will come to a conclusion.

Semi-spoiler, I know.

But you know what?  In order for Volume 3 to be ready, we needed to have the cover for Volume 4 so that it could go in the back of the third issue.

Would you like to see?  Here you go!

This is by far my favorite cover!  It’s simple, but it reveals a lot.

Let’s get artistic for a moment.  We can see, just by observing the covers, that John is undergoing radical, epic changes throughout the series.

Consider the cover for Volume 1:

Here we see John, lying in a pool of his own blood.  He looks weak; he looks helpless.   His eyes are all big, and the fear is evident on his face.  He even looks a little on the younger side.

Now look again at the cover for Volume 4.  His sword is brandished, he’s standing at the ready, and his cloak is flapping awesomely in the imaginary breeze.  Instead of worry and fear, his face is showing evident determination.  And his eyes are narrowed with courage and sincerity.  What’s more, he looks tall, powerful, and more mature.

To a degree, he almost looks like a different person.

Lots of good stuff happening in The Golden Lands!  I’m happy to announce that I’m six books away from having sold a hundred copies!

Keep up the support; it really means a lot to me.  And thanks to all who have already purchased/downloaded Volumes 1 and 2!

Your Author,

Dom

ONE!!!!!!!

This is it.  One more day until I publish The Golden Lands via Smashwords!  Tomorrow’s the day!

It’s been a really busy week, polishing everything off and making everything as perfect as it can get.  But I can tell it’s been worth it, and it’s going to be worth it.  Thank you for all the support you’ve given me so far, and I hope that you’ll stick with me as we continue on this journey together.  You’ve been immensely helpful.  I hope the pleasure you derive from my writing will be sufficient payment.

So here’s the overview of Volume One: Shadows in the Sunlight:

Genre: Fiction/Fantasy/Dark/Young Adult and Teen/Adventure

And let’s not forget that the plot-flow and the characters behave like those of an anime 🙂

Short synopsis:

Left for dead by a band of strange, dark warriors, John Hedekira sets out on a quest to get revenge and to rescue his siblings from the hands of his attackers.  Joining him is the kind, innocent Faith Pinck, and together they must stop the evil warriors before they can complete their mission, a dark plot to collide humanity with the world of an unholy, supernatural being.

And just so all of you know, my page “The Prologue” has been updated, with a newly edited version of the prologue.

….

*Deep breath*

Get excited for tomorrow!

Your AA,

Aul

TWO!!!!!

Two more days until I publish the first volume of The Golden Lands!!!  Here’s a brief teaser to get you pumped:

They begin dragging Soror and Frater out of the house.  I cry out to them, raising my sword, but I am blocked by a swarm of the beasts.  The darkness is so thick around me, so dark I’ve never seen anything like it, as though the darkness is a black wall connecting the beasts, emanating from their skin.  The way they move makes my head swim, like they keep multiplying and then vanishing into the darkness.  I charge them, and two of them step out to meet me.  One after another, I cut both of them down.  I hear my siblings scream from outside, and I raise my head to look for them outside our demolished front door.  I see them with their arms outstretched for me, and then all of a sudden I feel pain erupt in my stomach and I gasp.  Time freezes for a moment, and then I gasp again, looking down at the blade sticking into my body.  The blade retracts, and I release a quivering breath.  I fall to the ground on my side, watching as my blood pools beneath me, warm against my side.  As I lay there,—sharp, burning pain running through me—I look up, seeing outside within the fading light of day a distinct figure; a beast with long, matted hair, and a red cape.  And I know he is their leader.

Then they leave.  Their cries sound for long, pain-filled moments after, and then they fade into silence.  And all that’s left behind is blood and shadow.

There’s still a bit more work for me to do.  If any of you have some advice about self-publishing, please let me know!  (Especially informing me about certain traps that I could run into).

Thanks for your support!  Almost ready to go!
