Writing Doesn’t Pay

To my fellow bloggers, aspiring authors, and self-published authors:

It’s the truth, and it’s frustrating.  No one pays you to write.  No one pays you for being creative, or for working hard at what you love, to become better and better until you’re the best you can possibly be.  We spend minutes, hours, days, perfecting our craftsmanship of writing.  We carefully build and chisel every sentence until our writing sounds and looks exactly the way we want it to.  In our own little world, the world that we create, everything is going according to plan.

And hardly anyone else will ever know about it.

There’s something about being a writer that seems incredibly depressing and lonely, if you really stop to think about it.

We can have god-like creativity; we erect mountains, dig valleys, create cultures, carefully craft every facet of our own made-up society; we pour every bit of our own identity into our writing, and we would just DIE for someone to notice it.

And then no one does.

Other stories suddenly seem unworthy in our eyes.  “My idea is better,” we think.  Or “This person’s writing sucks.”  In a world where every author is fighting for attention, how can we not grow competitive?

I don’t know what the point of this post is.  Perhaps it is just to express and share my feelings with other bloggers (and I KNOW you’re out there).  I’m not trying to dampen anyone’s mood.

The truth is, every author must cultivate hope.  That’s the only way we can finish what we started; that’s the only way we can reach the goals we want.

Do you mind if I quote something I wrote in a story, back in 2013?

“You’re right.  You cannot do anything.  You are powerless.  I was powerless.  There was nothing that I could have done to save you by my own strength.  But power and strength, inner power and strength, are not things that can be created by man.  These must be given to him.  Even as a man, at the height of your physical strength, your own power isn’t enough to save this world from destruction.  Your own power cannot save the life of one woman, even one that you hold dear.  You are human, Earyis, and as am I.  But in this world, hope is not lost.  Hope—” Terren shook his head, sighing with evident stress and anxiety, as if remembering something horrible or difficult he had experienced “—hope must be surrendered to.  You have no strength, no power, so you must surrender yourself to the hope that it will be given.  Aid will come, and even in your darkest hours, when you cannot find the light, when it should be breaking through the clouds, or shining on the horizon, but it does not, you must hope that it will come…For without hope, Earyis, there is only despair, and where there is despair, there is death.”

-The Dawn of Despair

Cheers to hope!  Feel free to vent your own blogging/writing struggles in the comments!

Cancellation of Self-Publication…For Now

You could call it “cancellation”.  The truth is, my story is going to come off the grid for a little while.  There’s some rebuilding that should be done; rebuilding that needs to happen.  I’m still going to blog.  I’m still going to be around.  But my story needs a bit of a makeover.

So, for the time being, I am cancelling the self-publication of my fantasy series.

I hope you can understand, and that none of you are too disappointed.  That being said, any and all advice as to how I can market my book better in the future would be greatly appreciated!  I need to get better at networking in order to become a better self-published author.  My book-covers need to look more professional.  And the story-line needs a bit of revising.  I am even changing the title of the series!  And since I have maintained all of the rights to my book, I can make such revisions to my series as I please.

I’m sure that all of you, my fellow authors and bloggers, can understand where I’m coming from.  Sometimes we need to take a step back.  A lot of people thought my series was great…and maybe it is.

Well…it’s time to make it better.

Forget and Not Slow Down

Recently, Kristen Lamb wrote a post on her blog about how attitude effects everything we do as writers.  If you want to become a world-famous author, you have to leave behind all of your doubts and develop a winning attitude.  A winning attitude means that you’re going to persevere.  A winning attitude will help you climb to the top, and not worry about falling; and even better, it will help you pick yourself back up, no matter how many times you face rejection.

Anyone who is trying to make it big time in the self-publishing industry (like yours truly), needs to have this virtue of perseverance.  I will openly admit, first and foremost, that I do not have this virtue yet.  I’ve given up so many times before; I’ve fostered the idea that no one will ever want to read my books, that becoming popular is too hard.

The truth is, all of your doubts only carry as much truth as you put in to them.

If you’ve been following my blog for a long time, you’ve probably recognized that I go through “phases”.  Sometimes I will seem like an avid blogger, and then other times I won’t even exist.  It’s bad, and it needs to stop.  Consistency is everything in blogging, in writing, and just in life.  And that’s what I need to work on.  I know I’ve said all of this before, but if I don’t say it again, I won’t ever reach that point where I am finally consistent.

Do you also struggle with consistency?   Do you have any plans for remaining consistent with your blog/writing?

Cheers to another phase…only may it be a phase that doesn’t end!

Big Changes!

thank you gif

So I’ve finally come out of hiding.  And guess what?  The blog has a new look.  I’ve been working on making it more content oriented, and I removed the pictures and background, which didn’t look professional enough.  I’m liking the way it looks now.  Be sure to check it out!

Okay, so the look of the blog has changed…what else is changing?

How about the NAME OF MY SERIES?! That’s right.  “The Golden Lands” is no more.

After a lot of thought and discussion, I decided that “The Golden Lands” isn’t a strong, gripping name.  I don’t think it will attack people who are in the mood for a fast-paced fantasy novel.  It’s going to be hard to part ways with that title…I still call the series “TGL” every now and then.  But part of being a writer is being mature enough to change things.  Thus, I’m changing the name of the series to “Elithius”.

What’s Elithius?

Elithius is the name of the my made-up universe.  All events of my series take place in Elithius.   I decided to name my series “Elithius” because it’s original, it’s exciting, it sounds magnificent…and it sounds like a fantasy novel.  And that’s what I’m writing.

So it fits 😉

Other things will be changing too.  The covers of my books will be undergoing some serious changes.  They need to look more professional and more exciting.  No offense to my sister who created my covers, but hey, she was the one who suggested that I upgrade them!

Other things will be changing in regards to the story of my series.  I can’t go into too much detail here, for obvious reasons, but the beginning of the story will be changing; it’s going to be more plot related…and I’m talking to the MAIN plot of my series, which no one has ever encountered yet.

Lots of things are in motion now, and I’m really excited to see how it’s all going to turn out!

But most importantly, it’s important that I admit:

I couldn’t do this without you guys!  You guys rock!  Without your support, I honestly would get depressed and doubt myself, and I would stop writing.

So thank you 🙂

A Big “Thank You!”

Featured Image -- 410

Hey everyone!  I just wanted to give a shout-out and a thanks to anyone who downloaded Volume 4.  I hope you guys are enjoying the book, and the influx of downloads is definitely something that I appreciate.  I can’t wait to hear what all of you think of the ending…I have to admit, I’m expecting to receive a few questions from some inquisitive readers.  Hopefully it knocks your socks off…

…if you’re wearing socks, of course.

Volume 4 is still free as an eBook.  You can download it here or find it on iBooks, barnesandnoble.com (as a Nook book), Kobo.  (On Kindle it’s 99 cents)

Interested in my series?  Click here to check out Volume 1!

Once again, thank you all for the support!  I couldn’t do this without you.

Stay awesome!

A “Golden” Afternoon

From what I’ve been told, most people can read one of my books in an afternoon.  That may not be the case with Volume 4, since it is twice the size of my other novellas (about 170 pages).  But, well, it’s a great way to spend maybe two afternoons.

I love this picture of John XD

Volume 4 is still free as an eBook at Smashwords.com.  Click here to download your own free copy.  I made a promise at the beginning of the book that Volume 4 would be the best, and as far as I can judge, I think I did a pretty good job keeping that promise.   Volume 4 contains a thicker plot, more action, and more magic.  There actually hasn’t been too much “magic” in my series so far–not really.  Sure, there are fantasy creatures, but this is the first volume of my series that introduces a form of magic.

There’s a decent amount of internal struggle between characters.  My whole series is definitely about friendship, but this book is particularly about family.  John, the main character, now has a shot at rescuing his little brother and sister.  There’s a lot of tension placed on whether or not John will actually be able to save them, and what their relationship will be like after the battle.

Then there are the two new characters we meet in this book: Frances (female) and Ashida (male).  It’s from Frances that we see another familial tie get a little tight.  And Ashida is set on rescuing his wife.  It’s also from Ashida that we receive the first form of magic of the series.  I really hope you guys like Ashida…he’s a boss!

Overall, I’m looking forward to seeing what you guys will say about Volume 4!  Like I said, Volume 4 is still free, so if you have a free afternoon (or two), feel free to grab a copy and get cozy.  I hope it will be an afternoon (or two) well spent!

Stay awesome!

Sorry for the Short Notice…Volume 4 Will be Published on TUESDAY!!!

The title says it all.  Grab a snack.  Grab some friends.  Tell your grandparents.  Get cozy.  Another volume of The Golden Lands has arrived!!!

At long last, after a much anticipated wait, Volume 4 is finally finished.  As I have said before, not only have I completed another book–due to much help from family, friends, and the Big Guy–but also the first story arc of TGL.  This is a cause for celebration…meaning that the existing books of TGL will be undergoing some constructive changes.  More editing will be done, the covers will be updated, etc.  In other words, I’m using this opportunity to revise TGL as the series now stands.  There’s a lot of work to be done.

But hey, we can worry about that later!  Here’s an overview of Volume 4, in case you missed it!

John, Faith, and Bernard have come farther than they ever thought possible.  They’ve persevered through every struggle, every personal trial, and every foe that has come their way.  Now the final battle has arrived.   Allying with the people of Castrum Fortress, John and his friends must storm the city of Howaito Maki and defeat the three Evil captains…or every prisoner of the Evil will die.

We come to a halt, stopping right beneath the wall which rises high above us.  Thunderous booms sound in the distance, and we can vaguely hear the clashing of weapons and the screams of pain.  “So the fighting has already started,” says one of the scouts with us.

“That’s our diversion,” states Ashida.  “Let’s make the most of it.”

A long rope dangles from where we fastened it at the summit of the wall.  It’s our only way up and into the city.  I raise my eyes to the top of the rope, and I feel my heart beat faster.  I don’t know why, but the top of this rope…it’s like the threshold—the threshold of destiny.  Once I climb this rope, I’ll be in the city.  I’ll be on the final part of my journey.  I’ll be on the doorstep of rescuing my siblings.

My siblings…

This is the final endeavor.  I feel like I’ve known everything that would happen up until now.  I’ve never been surprised truly.  There hasn’t been as much mystery as I feel there is now.  Nothing about the future is clear anymore.  Nothing is black and white.  Because, from here…

—I look at the sky, the clouds, the dullness and gloom that fills this region—

…everything is gray.

I cast a worried glance at Faith and Bernard, and I can’t help but feel closer to them at this moment.  “Listen,” I say, “whatever happens, I want you both to know that you’ve been great; you’ve been my best friends.  I know we’ve been through a lot, and a big part of that is my fault, but—”

“John,” Bernard cuts me off, “it’s okay.  Stop acting like we’re going to die when we get in there.   We can do this.”  He smiles reassuringly at me, as does Faith.  “Come on,” Bernard says, stepping towards the rope, “let’s go get your brother and sister.”

It’s time, ladies and gentlemen.  Buckle up.   It’s going to be an epic ride.

Stay awesome,

Editing for Volume 4 is Complete!

Copyright 2015

The title says it all.  Editing for Volume 4 has been completed, which means I am one (huge) step closer to publishing Volume 4!

I hope you understand what is going on in the grand scheme of things; I hope you understand how big this is, not just for me, but for the overall series of The Golden Lands.  The first arc has been finished.  This means that the entire series, as it now exists, will be undergoing a sort of transformation, as if in honor of the first arc being complete.  The cover of Volume 1 (which is, by the way, still free as an eBook) has been changed/updated, and I intend to implement similar revisions to the other covers as well.  Volume 1 is also undergoing more vigorous editing…it shouldn’t change a whole lot, but the general idea is that Volume 1, the place where all of this began, will be given a new, fresh, professional feel.

Tell me that doesn’t look swagged-out

New ideas are springing into my mind like flowers in spring.  “Soul Bleeder”, the mini/background series that was supposed to be like “Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.” (but in The Golden Lands, of course), as of now, will become its own mini book series.  Writing a blog-series just doesn’t reach far enough, and it doesn’t make “Soul Bleeder” official enough.  Thus, turning it into a book series will ensure that I give “Soul Bleeder” the attention it deserves.

More artwork should be on the way too; I plan to make a poster in honor of the first arc.  It’s almost like the cover for a season of a TV show, containing epic shots of all the characters, but combined into one photo.  Volume 5’s cover is also on the way…it should be done fairly soon.  And, although I’m not sure if this will actually happen, Volume 3 might get an entirely different cover…maybe with *cough* Bernard on the front.

TONS of stuff happening, people.  Get hype and spread the word!!!

Stay awesome,

New Agendas and Updates

Greetings, dear followers and supporters!

I’m happy to announce that editing for Volume 4 is underway, and it shouldn’t be long before it is published!  The first arc of my series, the “Soror and Frater” arc, is finally finished.  And have no fear; it is the first arc of many.  The world of The Golden  Lands is about to get a little bit bigger, more mysterious, and more magical.  There’s a lot to look forward to, coming into the next arc.  But as for now, this is the “end of Season 1”, to speak in TV-show terms.

That being said, allow me to give you some clear, concrete updates and agendas that I hope to stick to:

  • Like most TV-shows, there will be a decent gap in between the end of Season 1 and the premiere of Season 2.  So after the end of Volume 4, there will be a longer wait than usual until Volume 5 comes out.
  • I don’t plan to use that extra time idly.  Rather, I intend to redo my “Soul Bleeder” series.   If you haven’t already noticed, the page that was entitled “Soul Bleeder” now reads “Soul Bleeder: The “Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.” of The Golden Lands”
  • What does that mean?  Well, first of all, for those who are unaware of what “Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.” (AOS) is, it is a TV-show set in the world of the Marvel superheroes (like the Avengers).  AOS is pretty much the story of everything that’s going on behind the scenes of the Avengers; you learn about certain characters or villains that will appear in the movies before the movies even come out.  It builds a lot of excitement, and gives you a more in-depth experience of the Marvel universe.  The important thing for you to know is that, like “Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.”, Soul Bleeder will be a story about everything going on behind the scenes of The Golden Lands, and everything will tie in (most likely around Volume 8).
  • This will require a lot of work though.  Thus, I feel like I need a bit of a break to make this all work–tying Soul Bleeder in with The Golden Lands.
  • There’s not much else for me to say!  Please consider supporting my series.  Self publishing is very hard and I need all the help I can get!  A rebblog, a review, anything will help, and it doesn’t have to be difficult!  If you like The Golden Lands, please tell the people that you can!
  • Volume 1 is still free as an eBook!  If you haven’t already grab a copy!  People have lots of good things to say about Volume 1, so I know you’ll enjoy it: https://www.smashwords.com/books/view/535151

Volume 4 is Finished

I finished writing Volume 4.  It’s not ready for publication, but finishing the novella is obviously the first step!  I’m seriously very excited, as I expect this book to be the best installment in the series so far.  Lots of action, epic one-on-one battles, character development and crises, and new, magical twists to my fantasy world.

There’s a lot happening in this volume!   It’s twice the size of Volume 1…that being said, Volume 1 is only 77 pages.

SPEAKING OF VOLUME 1, I fixed the cover of the paperback copy.  Originally, the cover image didn’t extend to the edge of the front cover, leaving this ugly, unprofessional white border on the outside:

TGL book

Now that problem is fixed.  Check out the difference!

Volume 1 Comparison
It’s the one on the right 😀

Lots of exciting this are happening with TGL!  I hope you want to be a part of it.  I will get back to you with a release date for Volume 4, but as for now, stay tuned!
