The Metamorphosis of Volume 3’s Cover

Well, I said it would be happening.  In light of finishing the first story arc of The Golden Lands, lots of renovations are being made in order to improve my series as a whole!  With Volume 4 having been finished, there is cause for some celebration…and part of that includes making sure that Volume 3 got a cover it deserved.

Here’s what Volume 3 USED to look like:

A little vague, a little obscure…perhaps a little unprofessional.

And here’s what it looks like now!!!!!!

For those of you that are die-hard TGL fans, can you guess who that is???

RIGHT!  It’s Bernard!  As of yet, Clare and I haven’t drawn a picture of the third-main-character.  But here he is.  I have to say, Clare did a wonderful job with the outline for Bernard, working him out basically from scratch.  And I think he might even be…unfortunately…more attractive than John!  (Get it?  John is supposed to be me!)

Tell me what you think!!

Stay awesome,

(P.S. my mega-sale still continues!  Volume 1 (click here) is free, as is Volume 4 (click here).  Also,  Volumes 2 (click here) and 3 (click here) have been lowered to $0.99 from $2.00).  DON’T MISS OUT!

So, What are People Saying about The Golden Lands???

Here’s what readers have been saying about my series The Golden Lands so far:

Reviews for Volume 1:

“Lots of action and interesting philosophy on good versus evil, with a nice set of mysteries. The battle scenes are well-described, and [I] am looking forward to further stories.” (Author Christy Nicholas, four star review) (Smashwords.com)

“…John Hedekira and Faith Pinck are both realistic characters with depth, and the story is fast-paced and exciting…” (Fan, five star review) (Smashwords.com)

Reviews for Volume 2:

Volume 2 is even better then the first ! The characters are very realistic and the action scenes are amazing. I’m definitely looking forward to reading volume 3!” (Fan, five star review) (Smashwords.com)

“Overall, the excitement that I loved in the first story continues and increases in the second, and I am most certainly looking forward to the next volume.” (Fan, five star review) (Smashwords.com)

Reviews for Volume 3:

These volumes just keep getting better and better! There is so much action and even some surprising twist in it. It’s definitely worth a read!” (Fan, five star review) (Smashwords.com)

Wow! Volume 3 has some really awesome action scenes. The excitement is definitely building for the fourth volume. I think the characters could have a little more depth and internal struggle in this book, but their external conflicts make up for that. Overall, this book is very well done! I can’t say anything that would be a spoiler, but the end has a surprising twist, too.” (Fan, five star review) (Smashwords.com)

I’m excited to hear what people will say about Volume 4!

There’s lots of excitement growing for The Golden Lands.  Wanna get in on the action? Click here to download Volume 1 for free as an eBook!  Also, for your information, Volume 4 is free as of now, and Volumes 2 and 3 are on sale!

In case you missed it, the fourth book of my series, The Golden Lands will be coming out tomorrow!  As usual, I plan on making Volume 4 free for a little while, just like I did with Volumes 1-3 when they first debuted.  However, this is just a note to tell you that Volumes 2 and 3 will NOT be free on the occasion of Volume 4 being released.

Let me explain:

In the past, as some of you may know, whenever I released a new volume, I made every other existing volume free.  In other words, whenever a new volume got published, I had the biggest super-sale ever on the whole series.  Now, however, I plan to veer away from that.  Volume 1 will remain free (because it always is) and Volume 4 will be free (because that’s how I roll) but Volumes 2 and 3 will receive only a discount.

Thus, Volumes 2 and 3, for a limited time only, will cost 99 cents as an eBook, instead of the usual $2.00.

I’ll admit it: sometimes I wonder how loyal my followers really are.  How much do you actually care about The Golden Lands?  Anyone can start following me and then realize that whenever I release a new volume, every book in the series is free.  Anyone could time when they download my books so that they come away with every story without paying a cent.   Now I’m interested to see who really thinks TGL is worth a little bit of their money—198 cents, to be exact (99 cents X 2).  If you enjoyed Volume 1, will you be willing to pay just a little bit of money for Volumes 2 and 3, and then grab Volume 4 while it’s free?

Your move.  I am trusting that many of my closest followers will not disappoint.

Sorry for the heavy post XD

Volume 4 is Finished

I finished writing Volume 4.  It’s not ready for publication, but finishing the novella is obviously the first step!  I’m seriously very excited, as I expect this book to be the best installment in the series so far.  Lots of action, epic one-on-one battles, character development and crises, and new, magical twists to my fantasy world.

There’s a lot happening in this volume!   It’s twice the size of Volume 1…that being said, Volume 1 is only 77 pages.

SPEAKING OF VOLUME 1, I fixed the cover of the paperback copy.  Originally, the cover image didn’t extend to the edge of the front cover, leaving this ugly, unprofessional white border on the outside:

TGL book

Now that problem is fixed.  Check out the difference!

Volume 1 Comparison
It’s the one on the right 😀

Lots of exciting this are happening with TGL!  I hope you want to be a part of it.  I will get back to you with a release date for Volume 4, but as for now, stay tuned!

John, Faith, and Bernard have come farther than they ever thought possible.  They’ve persevered through every struggle, every personal trial, and every foe that has come their way.  Now the final battle has arrived.   Allying with the people of Castrum Fortress, John and his friends must storm the city of Howaito Maki and defeat the three Evil captains…or every prisoner of the Evil will die.

We come to a halt, stopping right beneath the wall which rises high above us.  Thunderous booms sound in the distance, and we can vaguely hear the clashing of weapons and the screams of pain.  “So the fighting has already started,” says one of the scouts with us.

“That’s our diversion,” states Ashida.  “Let’s make the most of it.”

A long rope dangles from where we fastened it at the summit of the wall.  It’s our only way up and into the city.  I raise my eyes to the top of the rope, and I feel my heart beat faster.  I don’t know why, but the top of this rope…it’s like the threshold—the threshold of destiny.  Once I climb this rope, I’ll be in the city.  I’ll be on the final part of my journey.  I’ll be on the doorstep of rescuing my siblings.

My siblings…

This is the final endeavor.  I feel like I’ve known everything that would happen up until now.  I’ve never been surprised truly.  There hasn’t been as much mystery as I feel there is now.  Nothing about the future is clear anymore.  Nothing is black and white.  Because, from here…

—I look at the sky, the clouds, the dullness and gloom that fills this region—

…everything is gray.

I cast a worried glance at Faith and Bernard, and I can’t help but feel closer to them at this moment.  “Listen,” I say, “whatever happens, I want you both to know that you’ve been great; you’ve been my best friends.  I know we’ve been through a lot, and a big part of that is my fault, but—”

“John,” Bernard cuts me off, “it’s okay.  Stop acting like we’re going to die when we get in there.   We can do this.”  He smiles reassuringly at me, as does Faith.  “Come on,” Bernard says, stepping towards the rope, “let’s go get your brother and sister.”

Hope you guys are excited!!!  I know I am.

If you haven’t already or you’re interested in my series, you can download a free copy of the first book, Volume 1: Shadows in the Sunlight by clicking here.

Thanks for being awesome!

The Two Part Finale

You can blame me for not speaking about this as much as I should.  I’m usually the type of person that laughs at my own jokes, replays my own highlights in football, and acts out the greatest feats I’ve accomplished.  That being said, I think my own books are awesome.  What author wouldn’t?  Why else follow through with a book idea, if you don’t think it’s great?

Consequently, you can take my word for it: Volume 4 of The Golden Lands will be the best yet.  I’m not sure why I haven’t been blogging about it as much as I should be!

Pretty much, this how I’m viewing the “plot/story flow” of my series:

  • Things begin in Volume 1: Shadows in the Sunlight
  • Things get personal between the characters, and also between the characters and the readers in Volume 2: Wrath
  • Things get exciting in Volume 3: The Ghost of Hedekira
  • And finally, for Volume 4, things get epic, intense, and reach their pinnacle and ultimate fulfillment.

The title of Volume 4 may be undergoing some changes.  Why?  Well, Volume 4 is turning out to be much longer than expected, at least in comparison to all the other volumes.  So far, I haven’t published a volume of TGL that was longer than 90 pages.  Volume 4 is already 125 pages long, and I haven’t finished it yet (although I’m very close to).  Because of Volume 4’s length, I’ve decided to make it into two parts.  Don’t worry, it will still be one volume!  I’m just going to divide the actual book into two parts.

Part one, as of now, will be called either “The White City”, or “Howaito Maki” (the white city is called “Howaito Maki”, so both optional titles are centered around the same idea).

Part two will be given the original name for Volume 4, “The Red Captain” (a reference to Nirak, the antagonist).

If you haven’t already downloaded Volume 1 (which is a free ebook at Smashwords.com [click the image in the sidebar]), then I would highly encourage you to if you’re interested in my series.  The Golden Lands is a fantasy based story with characters that behave and think like characters from anime shows.  Why characters that resemble anime characters? Because anime characters (if it’s a good anime) have so much determination in whatever they’re doing, and the way they portray realistic, human emotion is one of the most beautiful portrayals I’ve ever seen in any form of art.

I’ll be releasing the overview of Volume 4 (containing the cover, description, and excerpt) very soon!

The Woes of Self-Publishing

“The best people that you can get to download your books are other authors.  Chances are, if you’re a self-published author, you’re going to need help with promoting your work.  And that means we need to stick together.   Self-publishing doesn’t always have to be a lonely endeavor.  Make relationships and get the train moving again.”

If you’re like me, you’ve probably written a book, or you’re currently working on one.  You are either an author, or an aspiring author.

the image is not mine

And, chances are, if you’re like me, you’ve researched and found out that self-publishing is the easier path for ensuring your written work will get some attention.  It’s the fastest choice, the choice that gives you the most control over your manuscript, and, if you don’t want to, you don’t even have to spend a penny.

However, if you’re like me, then you’ve most likely also discovered that self-publishing is VERY HARD.

To be a self-publishing author…for those of you that don’t know what this entails, allow me to explain.  If you SELF-PUBLISH a book, then you are the publisher.  Based upon this discovery, we can go further and ask the necessary question: what does a publisher do?

Publishers distribute written or graphic works of art to the public.  They are advertisers, promoters, business-people, sales-people.  That’s their job.  And, with every job that involves showing off and selling some sort of item, you had better be good at it!

Most likely, if you’re a self-published author, the revenue you receive from selling your books is NOT your only source of income.  Most self-published authors would be in a lot of trouble, if that were the case!  Publishing a book (meaning actively distributing and selling it to the public) is a lot of work, and very often, not too profitable.

My books tend to have much more success when (guess what?) I make them free for a short amount of time.  I’m talking about the eBook versions, of course.  People will wait for me to make them free (which, of course, is smart), or maybe they’re people that haven’t heard of my book, but they notice it while scrolling through Smashwords.com.  They see that the novella is free, and then decide to give it a chance.  I mean, they don’t have anything to lose.

This sounds like a poor way to build a following; if your book is worth something, then people will pay for it!  This is very true, and it’s why I don’t advise that you keep your book forever free.  BUT, there are also some advantages to making your book free:

  1. If you’re writing a series (like me), having at least the first book free can act as the “hook”.  Then, if you’re worried about making sure people understand the worth of your book, you can charge readers for the subsequent books of your series.
  2. Ripple effect: the people that download your book for free might start talking, or other people online will see what they’re reading.  Maybe they’ll be interested in buying a copy too.

Another great way to promote your book is finding other authors that write about the same things you do.  Wordpress.com is great for that, especially since you can search for specific tags.  Writing a historical fiction? Search for others writing about the same thing.  Strike up a relationship and find ways to help each other out.  The best people that you can get to download your books are other authors.  Chances are, if you’re a self-published author, you’re going to need help with promoting your work.  And that means we need to stick together.   Self-publishing doesn’t always have to be a lonely endeavor.  Make relationships and get the train moving again.

The last way to promote your book would be to keep on writing; blog on different sites.  Personally email people, comment on their blogs, and find nook in the internet where your audience is hiding.  Whatever your endeavor is, keeping working for it.  And even if you’re not sure where your going with your self-publishing career, keep moving forward.  Keep searching.  Keep writing.

For those that suffer the woes of self-publishing: Go create.  Go writers.

Your Author,

Praise God 😉

P.S. Volume 1 is still free as an eBook at Smashwords!
